List of Holidays as per Tamil Nadu - National & Festival Holidays

The Tamil Nadu Industrial Establishments (National and Festival Holidays) Act, 1958, mandates that employers provide employees with paid holidays for national events and specified festivals. Employees are entitled to holidays on

26th January                Republic Day

*      15th August                  Independence Day

*      2nd October                 Gandhi Jayanti

*      1st May                        May Day

along with five other festival holidays that can be specified by an Inspector in consultation with the employer and employees.  

The Act applies to industrial establishments in Tamil Nadu.

Where an employee works on any holiday allowed under the Act, he / she shall, at his option, be entitled to- 

  • *   twice the wages; or
  •    wages for such day and to avail himself of a substituted holiday with wages, on one of the three days immediately before or after the day on which he so works.
